Chilam Joshi, the four-day festival, kicks off on the 12th of May every year in Kalash Valley that is some 27 kilometers from Chitral. The valley is surrounded by the HinduKush mountain range. The festival commemorates the arrival of summer and celebrates the abundance of dairy products during the season.

Kalash women dress up in traditional, colorful clothes, adorned with heavy ornaments, sparkling beads, and feathered headbands. They dance around in circles, while the elders on the final day of the ceremony share legendary tales of the tribe. Natives of Kalaash believe they are the descendants of the Greek King Alexander the Great, who once ruled the entire region. They are a peace loving community who love music, singing and dancing. An interesting fact about the Kalashi tribe is that they sing for their departed loved ones and do not mourn on someone’s passing away.

Chilam Joshi festival is the true embodiment of colors and enriched diversified culture. A festival that is truly not to be missed. So if you are tied to your daily routine and cant get out to witness the beauty of the festival in real time, watch this video and let us motivate you a little to have a look at the other side of Pakistan!
